The path to justice for individuals impacted by exploitation is often filled with challenges. From navigating the complexities of legal proceedings to overcoming the biases affecting how testimony is received, the courtroom can be daunting. The Re-Fined team understands these obstacles and are committed to offering unwavering support to those seeking justice against their perpetrators.
Our Court Support Program provides individuals with tools, preparation, and confidence as they face these critical moments. Our holistic approach combines practical resources with emotional and spiritual guidance to ensure every individual feels empowered and dignified throughout the process.
This mission has been at the heart of our work, particularly during two historic cases — the Brock Franklin and Robert Hawkins trials. These landmark cases resulted in some of the longest human trafficking sentences in U.S. history, with Re-Fined playing a pivotal role in supporting the individuals who testified and ensuring justice was served.
Empowering Individuals in the Courtroom
The courtroom can be an intimidating space, especially for individuals who have endured sexual exploitation. Testifying against a perpetrator often brings up deep emotional scars, feelings of vulnerability, fear for their life or the lives of those they care about, and fears of being dismissed or judged. Re-Fined’s Court Support Program exists to ensure that no one has to face this experience alone.
Our program is built on a holistic approach, addressing not just the logistical challenges of testifying but also the emotional and psychological toll it takes. Here’s how we empower individuals to navigate the legal system with confidence and dignity:
- Comprehensive Court Preparation
Understanding what to expect can ease much of the anxiety tied to testifying. We provide detailed coaching on courtroom procedures, communication techniques, and body language. Individuals learn how to handle cross-examinations, respond with clarity, and manage the emotional weight of recounting their experiences. - Personal Styling and Wardrobe Support
Presentation matters, especially in a courtroom setting where biases can influence perceptions. Our professional styling services ensure that individuals feel confident and polished as they face the courtroom. From clothing consultations to personal care, we help individuals present themselves in a way that reflects their inner strength and dignity. - Trauma-Informed Emotional Support
The trauma of exploitation doesn’t disappear once someone enters the legal process — it can often intensify. Our team provides consistent emotional support, offering a safe space for individuals to express their fears, process their feelings, and build resilience. We’re there before, during, and after the trial, walking alongside them every step of the way. - Advocacy and Collaboration
We work closely with district attorneys, law enforcement, and stabilization homes to create a support network tailored to the individual’s needs. This collaboration ensures that their voice is heard and their needs are prioritized throughout the legal process.
Through this program, we create a foundation of confidence, courage, and care, empowering individuals to step into the courtroom knowing they are supported, valued, and not alone.
We are always welcoming new volunteers and resources to strengthen this critical program. If you feel called to be part of our mission, apply here.
Breaking Records in the Brock Franklin Case
In 2017, the Rocky Mountain Innocence Lost Task Force honored Re-Fined with the Exceptional Service Award for our unwavering support during the historic Brock Franklin trial. This case resulted in one of the longest human trafficking sentence in U.S. history: 472 years. Franklin was convicted on 30 counts of human trafficking-related crimes, marking a critical victory in the fight against exploitation.
Throughout the trial, Re-Fined provided comprehensive support to several courageous individuals who testified. Our efforts included:
- Styling and Wardrobe Consultations: Helping individuals feel confident and dignified in the courtroom.
- Emotional and Practical Guidance: Ensuring each individual was prepared to face the emotional challenges of testifying.
- A Compassionate Presence: Offering solidarity and support to empower individuals as they shared their stories with strength and resolve.
The recognition from the Rocky Mountain Innocence Lost Task Force underscores our commitment to walking alongside individuals on their path to justice. This trial was a monumental step in holding exploiters accountable and proved the power of holistic care in helping individuals reclaim their voices.
The Landmark Robert Hawkins Trial
The trial of Robert Hawkins was another groundbreaking case in the fight against human trafficking and exploitation. Hawkins was sentenced to 448 years in prison — now the longest sentences ever for crimes of this nature. This historic verdict sent a strong message about the severity of such offenses and the need for justice for those impacted.
Over the course of 2.5 years, Re-Fined worked tirelessly to support six individuals and one witness involved in the case. Our contributions included:
- 163 Hours of Support: Providing practical guidance, emotional care, and encouragement to individuals throughout the trial process.
- 32 Styling Sessions: Ensuring each person felt confident and dignified as they faced the courtroom.
- Unwavering Solidarity: Standing alongside individuals during their testimonies and beyond, creating a visible network of support that was deeply felt by those we served.
The defense even sought to limit Re-Fined’s presence in court, demonstrating the powerful impact of the support we provided.
“I loved looking over and seeing a crowd of women there for me, and they all walked out with me. He had to watch it all and see how powerful we are.”
— Individual involved in the Robert Hawkins trial
This case highlighted the importance of standing together to support individuals as they seek justice, showing that healing and restoration are possible, even in the face of profound challenges.
Beyond the Courtroom: Advocating for Change
For the team here at Re-Fined, courtroom victories are just one part of the journey. The fight for justice extends beyond the legal system, into the lives and futures of those impacted by exploitation. We believe in holistic healing, addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of individuals as they move forward.
Our partnerships with stabilization homes, counselors, and community organizations ensure that individuals continue to receive care after the courtroom lights go dim. Whether through Continuing Care Community (CCC), emotional healing, or practical support like our styling services, we remain a constant presence, walking alongside each person on their journey to wholeness.
